“Benemerenti” Decoration with tiara and keys of the Vatican City with the effigy of Pius XI.

Description

There is no certainty of the motivations that were the basis of the granting of these “benemerent” medals by the various pontiffs. They are known in fact with the effigies of Leo XIII, Benendetto XV, Pius XII, Paul VI and John XXIII.
In some cases they were issued after the conclave which had elected the Pope or during a holy year.
This specimen is mounted with a triangular belt indicating a military merit and therefore it can be assumed that it was destined to a soldier of the Swiss Guard.
